Communication protocol

Communication protocol

To enable communication between different systems, a communication protocol is required that regulates data transmission. The protocol specifies the rules and standards in the transmission. Communication protocols are implemented in both hardware and software and can include specifications for authentication, error detection and signaling. In addition, they can also specify the syntax, semantics, and synchronization of analog and digital communications. In building operations, communication protocols are essential to enable a wide variety of devices and systems to communicate with each other. Sensors, actuators, control units, and applications can use communication protocols to exchange information and transmit instructions to ensure effective operation. The communication protocol also defines how the connection between components is established, maintained and terminated. Examples of such protocols include BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks, or KNX. The use of such protocols enables seamless integration of different systems in the building to realize automation functions and enable efficiency gains and improved comfort.
