Sector coupling or sector coupling refers to the close linking of energy and economic sectors. The aim is to further promote increased energy efficiency and the integration of renewable energies. The sectors of electricity, heating and cooling, transport and industry, which have long been considered independently of each other, are to be optimized together in a holistic approach within sector coupling. For example, the use of renewable energies enables the decarbonization of all economic sectors. It enables synergy effects and is often considered a key concept for the energy transition and for achieving climate targets.
An energy system that is used holistically across sectors is called a smart energy system. In the real estate sector, sector coupling supports the switch to renewable energies such as solar energy or geothermal energy. Surplus electricity can be fed into charging stations for electric vehicles, for example, reducing CO2 emissions. Sector coupling thus contributes to the creation of a sustainable, integrated overall energy system.
