Fault Detection & Diagnostics (FDD)
Fault Detection & Diagnostics (FDD) refers to the continuous, automated monitoring of building technology. In "Fault Detection," operational data from building systems is constantly compared with expected behavior. Rule-based methods, models, and artificial intelligence (AI) methods automatically detect and identify anomalies, such as malfunctions or inefficient operating states. Causes include a sticking valve, a faulty sensor, or a system running outside its scheduled operating hours. In "Diagnostics," FDD determines the probable cause and the affected component. This allows issues to be resolved before they lead to failures, higher energy costs, or compliance risks. Studies show that control and system problems cause 15 %–30 % of the energy consumption in commercial buildings. FDD is therefore a key lever for energy and system efficiency and for the longevity of building services equipment. It also forms the basis for the next step: autonomous buildings that regulate themselves, predict maintenance needs, and deploy resources in a targeted way.
aedifion uses real-time data collection and AI-based analytics to continuously evaluate operational data, identify inefficiencies and malfunctions, and derive concrete recommendations for operators and owners. The vendor-independent platform connects to both existing buildings and new construction. By combining FDD with building automation and self-learning methods, aedifion supports the shift from reactive fault management to an autonomous, self-optimizing building operation that reduces energy costs and CO₂ emissions.
